7 things you need to know to be gaining muscle

If you just recently decided to start gaining muscle you need to know the basics. Being hardgainer (aka the skinny guy) it’s a bit different from those who have always been well built guys. This post won’t go into great detail because it would be awfully long. I will go more in-depth with future posts. Let’s lay the basics:
1. EAT and eat A LOT
You need to eat 6 times a day. 5 times at minimum. We have a very fast metabolism and should eat each 2-3 hours. You can eat whatever you like (mostly) because we tend to not store much fat in our bodies. And it is a great advantage for us. We can eat whatever we like, like burgers, pizzas, etc. (I still stay away from them myself for most of the time though). Eating clean is best. Eat meat, eat vegetables, eat rice, pasta, fruits, nuts and drink milk. These foods have best value for those who want to gain muscle mass.
2. Don’t overdo cardio
Cardio is for those who want to loose weight or improve their stamina. You should warm up before a workout for 5 minutes, but you can’t exhaust yourself for 30 minutes each workout. It would be counter productive. Cardio burns calories and we need to get more calories than we consume during the day.
3. You grow when you rest NOT when you train
You don’t have to train 7 times a week. If you did and gave your body no rest you’d be losing weight and overtraining. It’s absolutely necessary to give much needed rest for your body. It’s best to give your body 48 hours of rest before next workout (from my own experience). 3 workouts per week are the best for skinny guys like us. Go to gym, work your butt off and then go back home, EAT and rest.
4. Give your body at least 8 hours of sleep
This is related to the last topic. You grow the most when you sleep. Body isn’t doing anything physical. I prefer to sleep 10 hours a day but the minimum all hardgainers should be getting is 8 hours of solid sleep. By the way, I like to get some naps during the day when I don’t have what to do if I don’t get solid 8 hours of sleep at night.
5. Get some whey gainer
It’s a supplement that helps you gain mass. You can provide your body with necessary nutrients when you don’t have the time to eat. Get some milk, whey gainer, use a shaker and take the shake to your job/school/etc. Since you should be eating each 2-3 hours but you can’t really do that at work this is great way to supply your body with calories you need. But remember it’s just a supplement. It doesn’t mean you can drink it six times a day and not eat normal food. No. You better eat lots of real food.
6. Drink a shake and eat straight after a workout
You absolutely must eat as soon as possible after a grueling workout. Drink a shake right after it and during the next hour eat a good meal. That hour after a workout is golden chance to supply muscles with as much nutrients as possible since most of it will go straight to muscles (to help repair them faster after workout).
7. Focus on compound movements
Forget machines! Free weights are the best! Squat is better than leg press. Bench press is better than presses in the machine, etc. We skinny guys need to get our testosterone amount in the blood up and compound movements that workout your whole body and not just a simple body part, are way better at that than the machines that only challenge one body part.
So these are the basics, you wont be gaining successfully if you don’t follow these. If you disagree leave a comment and let’s discuss it ;).

So if i munch on power protein packs from starbucks throughout the day on my workout days, in addition to my normal 3 meals/day (dinner very protein-focused), and a shake typically after a workout, that is a good idea. seems i’m drastically boosting my calories per day, but it is low fat and high protein and i’m working out 3x/week without fail and also doing some cardio. thanks for the insight, like the blog so far.
Hey Josh,
glad you like the blog.
I don’t live in States so not sure what’s in those protein packs but it is an option if you can’t eat some chicken or pasta or turkey. Having 6 normal meals per day is BEST. But if you don’t have the time then get what you can , mate.
You could also drink a shake before you are going to bed. Esp. if your last meal was like an hour earlier. ;)
i notice trying to drink a shake in the AM after a morning workout makes me way too sleepy, my body isn’t used to that kind of intake in the AM, so i will try the advice to drink it before bed. Thanks!
Hmm.. You must get something after a workout into your body mate. Maybe try drinking a smaller amount of it at first and then finish it off half an hour later. It’s hugely important to let your muscles get nutrients after a workout.
You getting sleepy might be because of being tired, not because of shake also :) I get sleepy after a hard workout, but the I get to shower and sleepiness is gone ;)

Really? I was like :O when I read your blog telling us to eat 6 times a day! I can’t eat like that. That’s too much for me, I think. Isn’t it bad for you to eat 6 times a day? I mean, you should only eat during breakfast, lunch, and for dinner. And you also mentioned to sleep during the day if you want. If I do that, I can’t sleep at night and my work the next day will be ruined.
I believe that you have lots of time and don’t have to go to work.
Hi Marco!
All I write is possible. Yes you can eat six times a day. How can it be bad for you? If you have trouble digesting a lot of food then make portions a little smaller than usual ones you eat. And if you keep eating just 3 times a day your results will be the same – you will still be skinny. Get a shake after a workout, this is 4th meal a day already. And then get a few snacks during the day (nuts, protein bar, banana…anything).
And about sleeping, I said I like to get a nap IF I have nothing do. This doesn’t mean I always do it and that you must do it. I just show you one option to get more rest, mate :) If it screws up your day, then don’t do it! I only give you options and advice, you decide on what you do!

Hey. Love your blog, since I be an ectomorph. I got a quick question. I lap swim on my off lifting days which is a form of cardio but also works out all the main muscles. So it’s kind of a cardio and muscle workout in one. Is this a good idea (assuming I eat enough to offset the calories burned)?
Hi TJ,
Thanx for a compliment, appreciate it ;)
As for swimming, if you do it on the off days and eat enough to compensate the calories burned, then I see no problem with it, swimming is good for your posture also, so I’m all for it!
Cheers,
Adrian
Thanks Adrian!
You’re welcome ;)
really appreciable blog!!
i have been an ectomorphic, which makes hard to gain the mass & muscle . i have been able to gain some muscle of 6 kgs. overtime in 4-5 months with no strict training with very basic training such as push ups, chin ups etc & some basic weight training exercise. but following a good meal program in all these months.
Due to very busy schedule i will not be able to allocate good time to training . also now due to some travel conditions i will not be able to follow my high calorie protein diet, so does that mean i will lose all the muscle i have gained in that past time??
plz help me in this matter!
Hi Sac,
I doubt that you will loose ALL the muscle you’ve gained, I believe most of it will stay, but you will loose some IF you can’t eat enough. If you can’t get enough proteins, make sure you get enough Carbs, because they are your main energy source and if you don’t get enough of them, then you might loose a lot of muscle.
You did awesome, mate! Don’t worry, eat and you should be fine ;)
Best of luck,
Adrian
i can’t afford to take whey protein, how many glasses of regular milk should i consume?
Hi Luigi,
that sucks.. :( Maybe you can think something off and earn some money on the side somehow? It would be worth it!
As for milk, drink a liter a day at minimum. Some recommend drinking a gallon of milk daily.. Make sure that after a workout you get real food ASAP with proteins there! ;)
Best of luck,
Adrian

Hi,
Like your blog, I am 25years old guy, i am skinny and i tried going to gym and took heavy weights than my weight, i take weights which fat guys can’t take. But still my body not bulking, I am still skinny. nothing worked, I feel hurt for this, also people tease me, i really love to gain weight and look bit fat. please help me. Thanks.
Hi Amjed,
don’t feel down mate, you can do this! You just need some adjustments and you will be gaining. Two things, either you didn’t eat enough or you seriously overtrained. Shoot me an email from the Contact page on this blog with more details about how you trained. How many times per week, what exercises, how many days you rested, how many times per day did you eat, what did you eat, etc.. I’ll be able to help you more then!
Cheers
Thanks Adrian,
I have sent you a detailed email about my workouts and other activities, i have missed some points there, so i am mentioning you here, i eat three times a day, I use to sleep 7-8 hours but sometimes after my workout i don’t get sleep, i don’t know why, when everyone get good sleep after working out, but i don’t get sleep soon when the day i work out, i guess its because am overtrained so my muscles very active at night or don’t know what is the real reason, i like to know from you. waiting for your email and reply.Thanks.
Amjed, I’ve already sent you an answer, hope you got it! You definitely were overtraining so when you change your training to what I’ve written you should be able to get more sleep, if not then email me again, we will figure something else out!
Cheers
Yeah i got your email, definitely i will follow what you have written, be in touch. Thanks alot…
Looking forward to hearing from you! Best of luck
Hi Adrian,
How are you doing? shall i do push ups daily? Is it good for my body?
Amjed,
Don’t do them! Workout itself is enough ;) Just get plenty of rest!
Cheers
Ok thanks.
Hi ,
How many calories i have to consume per day to gain weight?
Amjed,
I see you are not reading the blog.. or I am not communicating well when I write. Either way, I have answered this question in an email already (3 paragraph about BMR) so read it or read the 8 Rules of Nutrition for Skinny Guys Gaining Muscle!

Whats going on Adrian, am loving the blogs. I have a quick ?. I am an athlete, very slim to say the least. I have to balk up on weight and muscles before this fall season rolls up. I have this Weight gainer Amp Mass XXX and i herd its the best one available with the most calories and proteins giving than any other. I just want to put weight on me and i also want to work on my upper body most than anything. I have free weights at the house and to me i believe im gonna stick to that for now. What would you suggest on this.
Hi,
drink that shake. I suggest you workout whole body mate. Why? Because legs are biggest muscle in the body and if you don’t train them you will waste a lot of possible gains, plus squat is an incredible exercise to strengthen your whole body and for athlete it is great one. Do this workout at home:

If you can’t do some exercises shoot me an email we will think something off.

Hey Adrian, I have some questions. I am an ectomorph. I have been working out for 5 months now. I used to weigh 140 pounds but now I weigh 180. I have put on a lot of fat. I’m guessing my diet was really bad. I ate about 5-6 meals a day. I had a protein shake in the morning, after working out and before I went to bed. I feel much stronger but my endurance has decreased a lot and i have a medium to big sized belly. My body looks more fat than fit. The program I used was optimum anabolics. I wanted to gain weight so I ate like crap and I succeeded in that but now I realized that I want to be fit with more muscle than fat.I am going to be shopping soon and I am wondering what kinds of food I should buy to put on some lean muscle and as little far as possible. I also scared that it will be harder to put on muscle because I have so much fat now. Do I need to slim down then try to gain muscle. I heard that muscle burns fat so the more you build the less fat you have. I hope you will be able to help me out in changing my body from the fat i have gained to a muscular looking body.
Hi Andrew!
First off congrats with gains! Now, I am not a fat loosing specialist but you definitely need to loose fat first and then get back to gaining muscle on a clean bulk! To do so, calculate your BMR and eat 500 calories less. This will help you loose that fat. Continue to workout as you did just eat less. As for foods, don’t drink whole milk, drink skimmed one, eat lean meat (chicken and turkey), get a lot of fruits and vegetables (keeps you filled but don’t have a lot of calories). As I said earlier just eat less than your BMR and use foods from my post about Best Foods for Gaining Muscle (there are no junk foods)!
P.S. If you want more advice please email me, it’s easier to comment and answer there ;)
Cheers
Im guessing I need to eat less calories then I burn to lose fat. I am going to stop eating junk food but should I consume skimmed milk or would water be better? Should I also incorporate more cardio now? Should I also start eating more fruit and vegetables? I gained 40 pounds of weight( mostly fat) so I am wondering how much of that might be muscle. I am hoping to lose 15- 20 pounds of fat in about 1 month but I am also scared that I might start looking skinny again because I am actual not even sure if I built any muscle at all. It just looks like I put on more meat(fat). Im guessing that my fat would be burning calories needed to build muscle so is that why I need to lose it. I actually feel it is going to be hard to lose fat( even though I am an ectomorph). Is there a certain weight I should drop down to like 165 or something before I start to bulk again. I’m also wondering if I might still grow even though I have weight lifted. I know you can’t stun your growth (unless you somehow damage your growth plates) but most of my younger cousins have already almost reached my height. Sorry if this is too much info at once or something does not make any sense.
Andrew, it’s like you haven’t read my answer to your earlier message!! Yes you need to eat less. You can also switch to water instead of milk. Read my answer again.
You have gained muscle. Definitely. Maybe half of what you gained should be muscle. Now focus on losing fat. Stop losing it when your abs will start to show (or you will have very little fat around your stomach). It wont be as hard to lose fat as for others but it will take time. I doubt you will lose 15-20lbs in a month. That’s not really healthy probably. So don’t expect too much, eat less for a couple of months and then look at the mirror. Or better yet take pictures, when you will like how you look in the pictures then start bulking again (CLEAN BULKING)…

you blog is really awsome mate.I’m really a skinny man and joining today in community gym here in Uk
Hey ,
I play for my regional basketball team , ages 17, train 3-4 times a week as well as a weight session … i think myself to be fairly strong but skinny …. im thinking about using a protein powder to increase my strength so i can be more of a threat on the court …. the only thing that’s stopping me is that i heard that it decreases the size of your penis
is this a load of rubbish or not ,
thankz
Hi,
It is a complete bullshit Adam! That will not happen ;)
Best of luck with basketball, I LOVE it too so hopefully I’ll hear about you in the future as you will get to NBA! ;)
Cheers
Hey Adrian,
Your clearly awesome for setting up this website, thanks. I’ve just got a question because im 15, too young to do weights and i hate bieng skinny.
I’ve been doing 200 sit ups a day and 100 press ups every other day, ive also just started to go swimming, planning on going 3 times a week. If i eat alot, and went on with this do you think i would see a difference?
Most of my freinds are built rugby players, i play, but im the skinny one, tired of bieng skinny. Anyways Thanks.
Thanx Najib, I appreciate your words A LOT!;)
Now, you ARE NOT too young to train with weights! They don’t stunt growth. Unless they don’t allow to go to the gym, try to join one ;) Bodyweight exercises wont help you much. You are better of buying two dumbbells and training at home than! Much better. Swimming will not help you gain muscle at all. It’s cardio.
So, your first priority should be gym, if you are not allowed to join it then dumbbells! Pushups and pull ups are your last resort (sit ups don’t do almost any good for mass gains, they just work abs).
If you need anything else, email me at adrian@36pounds.com! ;)
Best of luck
Thanks alot, read my e-mail when you have time.
